JANHIT MEIN JAARI

ISSUED IN PUBLIC GOOD

Article 1

GBM2

2 A.M., 15th October 2023

Starting on the note, that there was no feedback form for the Student Council in the General Body Meeting 2, thereby reflecting a flaw in the system, this is where it began. The form for the said meeting had a feedback option for the elected Class Representatives, non-elected Student Affairs Management Cell (SAMC) Secretaries, and the faculty.

By circulating an anonymous feedback form for the SC in GBM 1, the council rubbed its hands off from receiving another feedback two months into its first semester of serving.

We nonetheless submitted a form. It was read, we appreciate it. Although, there is a bigger problem.

It is a remarkable achievement for JSJC, to have yet another female President after Shravani Singh's successful tenure. GBMs during the former presidency were held to converse with the student body. Sahni’s second General Body Meeting was perhaps held with the same intent. However, the invite was accompanied by a necessity to attend.

Reet Kaur Sahni has proven to be an efficient worker as she promised in her manifesto for General Secretary in May 2022.

Jindal School of Journalism and Communication’s biggest annual academic event ‘Journalism Tomorrow’, specifically JT 4.0, has been a success under Sahni’s Presidency. Independent journalist Josy Joseph, FORCE Editor Ghazala Wahab, and Political Editor of The Caravan Hartosh S. Bal sat on a panel to discuss ‘Challenges to Indian Democracy’. On day 2, former NDTV Journalist, Sreenivasan Jain talked on ‘Corporate Ownership and the Collapse of Press Freedom in India’.

Bringing renowned journalists to discuss critical subjects for aspiring journalists at Jindal Global University in Sonipat is undoubtedly an achievement.

Radio JSJC, something promised in Sahni’s manifesto for General Secretary has 24 tracks on its name in a span of six months of functioning. JSJC TV, as promised in her Presidential manifesto, is already in talks.

Once upon a time, Gen Sec Sahni had also promised a JGU-wide newspaper with JSJC core board members. Hopefully, this is it.

Our serving President has played a crucial role in formulating JSJC as a space in the larger university circles. She is as accessible as the former President, if not more. The difference lies in the attitude though. Our current leader is not solution-oriented.

From creating a journalistic atmosphere in a classroom to getting a warning sorted out, the president is not the one you would want to approach. What if, you enter the class the next morning to find the first bench discussing it? The supposedly confidential notice is now 10x more dangerous.

If JSJC had a gossip magazine, her statement would already be on it.

She pretends to be as helpless as you for someone who is elected to lead you.

You would expect there to be times when your president would be capable of giving you a shoulder to cry on and helping you out with an approach that’s meant to resolve the issue at hand. However, often, it’s the other way around.

The President's sluggish approach towards our problems and expectations may not take the addition away from her resume but it sure isn't making her a people's leader.

The most recent attempt to set the ambiance under Sahni’s Presidency had students send in their childhood pictures to be put up at the JSJC studio. The event was organized by the Peer Support Committee and is an important one to be held in order to create a community-like feel at school.

The carrying out of light-hearted events is not the problem, but the lack of journalistic, and political events happening in these corridors is. The world burns, while Journalism and Film students sit in circles and discuss their weekends.

Ironically, JSJC has two operational clubs (applications for which were out 4 days post GBM1)- Cinephiles and Behind the Byline, both of which await active functioning.

This is where you realize the solution to apoliticism goes beyond the elected council.

We understand the toll of being the first to face a critical analysis during their tenure as President. We respect the seat you hold.

When you walk these corridors holding power on record or by word, you’re under scrutiny for all the right reasons. Remember, with great power comes great responsibility.

On a concluding note, providing feedback after a month of the Student Council being in power didn't seem fair. She deserved two.

In the tenure of Reet Kaur Sahni, we introduce to you the ‘WatchDogs’. Take the credit.

Note: We hope that the presence of foreign folks in our studio does not make the date of choice appear to be a strategic move. We gave it a sincere thought and soon realized the irony of suppressing our voice due to the presence of guests in the house. We are watchdogs- soon-to-be journalists, there are standards to abide by, and outright transparency is one of them. This article at its most reflects the conflict within our space and which space doesn’t have conflict. Griffith's crowd is warmly welcomed!

Wait for the next article; hopefully, it is never going to be the President again.
